I'm wondering whether any of my configuration changes have anything to do with it? The only major change I made was to change the location of the system Page File, and Temporary (TEMP/TMP) directories from their defaults, onto a separate drive partition which I earmarked especially. Then I made my configuration changes, and tried FSX - and it failed, as above. Messenger then installed with no problems. After some more messing around, I then performed another clean insall of Vista (the current one) and tried Windows Live Messenger immediately, as the first thing I did - before configuring the system as I wish.

Then when I tried to install Windows Live Messenger, I got a similar error message (the Microsoft.VC80, assembly thingy).
